Mike Mulligan was sure that his steam shovel, Mary Anne, could dig more in one day than 100 men could dig in a week! Then, one terrible day, Mike and Mary Anne are replaced by newer digging equipment.
So Mike and Mary Anne head for the country, where Mike offers to dig the cellar for Popperville's new town hall for free -- unless they can do the whole job in one day! Smelling a bargain, selectman Henry B. Swap agreed.
The townspeople gather around as Mary Anne digs faster and faster. As the sun set, she finishes, just in time. But now they are trapped in the cellar hole! Luckily, a little boy has the perfect solution.
